Places and Things That We Review or Recommend:

We look for places where New Yorkers go, things that actual New Yorkers do - not the places that are designed to be "the latest" spots for people to pose or that are there today and gone tomorrow.

We're not interested in places and things that are there for the sole purpose of separating you from your money.

Call us crazy but we don't understand coming to New York and eating at Applebee's (or the countless other chain restaurants that are available just about anywhere else). We remember Mama Leone's and Jimmy Ray's and ....

Above all - If we haven't been there or done it ourselves, you won't see it here!

We Are Writing For:

  • Everyone who believes it's still possible to have a great night out in New York that is different from what's available anywhere else - without breaking the bank!
  • People planning a trip to (or already visiting) New York who want more insight into where local people go or places that are not on all the tourist maps or in the guidebooks.
  • Business people and other visitors who have been to NYC countless times and don't really need to hear the chorus warble and shriek as that chandelier falls one more time (not that there's anything wrong with that!) or eat that suspicious looking sea creature served on a bed of something better-placed in the compost heap and which is now presented to you at a price that should make anyone with a conscience blush (and yes, we think there is something wrong with that!).
  • Other New Yorkers who need a break from "the crush".

Anonymity:

When we review a restaurant, show, or visit a place, we do it anonymously.

We're a team of several different longtime- or lifelong- New Yorkers and we often invite along people from out of town to gain their perspective.

We don't reveal our identity to restaurant personnel or present ourselves as "critics."

We want to let you know what we've experienced - unabashed and unadorned - without the frills and extras that often come when known critics or celebrities visit a restaurant.

The same holds true for shows or other events. We let you know what we like and why.

We're not out to be theatre or music critics and have no agenda to either puff or trash anyone.

We don't attend events on critics'- or press- passes. To us, this is the best way of letting you know what you can reasonably expect -- That is, if we look and act like average patrons who aren't getting perks and you look and act like average patrons who aren't getting perks, then we've got some common ground to share and something valuable to offer to make your night out a better one.

In all cases, we want you to have a great night out in a great city.
